This project is one of a few Grant funded Schemes under the Berwick upon Tweed Historic Area Improvement Scheme (BHAIS) for a private client. The grant is funded by English Heritage, Northumberland County Council and the National Lottery. The aim of this grant is to bring redundant buildings back into reuse.
This project is located within Castlegate, Berwick upon Tweed, which is a conservation area. The aim of this project was to create a new shopfront for the client that would give this building greater presence on the street in an effort to draw a tenant. In looking at the type of shopfront suitable we looked at the architectural language of the building and styles of shopfronts down the street. As little original shopfronts exist it required a great amount of research into the history of shopfronts. Here we have created an early style shopfront that is fairly simple in style that blends and reflects the architectural style of the building.
